SES Micro-Grids Kenya Limited (SESMA) was registered in Nairobi in July 2017. SES was constituted to develop, engineer, operate and maintain solar PV Micro-Grids in Kenya.

In 2017 Kenya was rated 142nd among 189 countries in terms of Human Development Index (UNDP, 2019). Poverty rate estimated to 36,1% in 2015/2016. 44% of Kenyan population does not have access to electricity (KPLC, 2018). Most of the rural population use kerosene or/and candles for lighting and are spending much more money than the grid-connected households. Universal access to modern sources of energy by 2030 (SE4ALL, 2016).

1.200 underprivileged people from Hurri Hills village expressed their need of electricity to eradicate poverty and promote prosperity.

 

Experience and capabilities

SESMA major milestone happened in October 2019, when a 20 kW solar PV Micro-Grid was commissioned in the locality of Hurri Hills, in Marsabit County. SESMA is operating this rural infrastructure since October 2019 for more than a year and is serving electricity to 44 customers with expansion plans for 2021.

Overview of Micro-Grid installed

Implementation and operation over 20 years of 1 innovative Solar photovoltaic Micro-Grid with circular Economy Hub and community empowerment to eradicate poverty and promote prosperity, and set-up of viable and robust business model answering local needs with a services approach, supported by a local community involvement and commitment. Transfer of technical knowledge will be done to the local operator and business creation and productive energy use knowledge, combined with social awareness done to all the community entrepreneurs through NGOs’ expertise.

Local population of the Hurri Hills village (> 1.200 beneficiaries) and the surrounding satellite villages population.

SERVICES

Individual management: contracts, connections, installations, payments, maintenance.

Indoor complete installations: with at least 2 sockets, 2 light points.

Quality of services: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in 4 Levels of service depending on the subscription, and enough power/energy to run constantly powerful productive uses.

Permanent maintenance: O&M in 3 levels of complexity.

Supply of high efficiency, productive equipment: light bulbs, radios, refrigerators, freezers, USB chargers, bank batteries, televisions, sewing machines, water pumps, among others.

SOLAR PRODUCTION

In 2020 there was a peak production of 7.8 kW, the highest daily production of 36kWh and the total yearly production was 6.258.55 kWh.
